Many Wealthy Families Put Off This Conversation

Forty minutes into a portfolio review that was supposed to take twenty, the numbers stopped being the point.

It happens more than you'd think. A meeting scheduled to talk allocations turns into something else entirely: the sibling who isn't sure where they'd stand if something happened to Dad, the spouse seeing the full financial picture for the first time in twenty years of marriage, the business owner who has a succession plan in their head but has never once said it out loud. Not because it's a secret. Because saying it out loud makes it real.

Here's what we've noticed: the biggest financial decisions are hardly ever what keeps people up at night. It's the conversation they haven't had yet. The one sitting just under the surface, growing heavier the longer it waits.

More money doesn't make that conversation easier. If anything, it raises the stakes enough that avoiding it starts to feel safer than having it. A modest estate is simple to divide. A complicated one invites exactly the kind of family friction nobody wants to be the one who starts.

Why this conversation matters more than people think

Legacy weighs on wealthy families more than many people assume from the outside. According to CEG Insights' 2024 research on ultra-affluent households, more than three-quarters of respondents said leaving a legacy was important to them, and over half described that legacy as passing down both financial assets and values, not just a number on a statement. The same research found fewer than half of those households had updated their estate plans within the past five years.

That gap between what people say matters and what they've actually gotten around to documenting is where the anxiety lives. It's not usually about not caring. It's about the plan living in someone's head instead of on paper, and in a conversation instead of a document.

What holds people back isn't usually the money

Financial avoidance often has less to do with a person's balance sheet and more to do with where their relationship with money started. Someone who grew up watching a family struggle can carry that unease into a life where the struggle is long over. Someone who grew up being told to keep up appearances can feel a quiet pressure around every financial choice, even a comfortable one. The fear doesn't always match the current reality. It just needs somewhere to go, and silence gives it plenty of room.

Left unspoken, that pattern doesn't stay contained to one generation. Attitudes about money get passed down through what gets said and, just as often, through what never does.

What starting the conversation actually looks like

It doesn't need to be one big sit-down with a script. It tends to start smaller:

  • Naming the topic out loud to a spouse or partner, even if the plan isn't finished yet.
  • Telling the next generation what exists and where, before "someday" becomes "too late."
  • Bringing the unfinished thought to an advisor who already has the full picture, instead of waiting until it's fully formed.

Financial peace of mind doesn't always come from having a perfect balance sheet. It often comes from saying the hard thing out loud instead of carrying it alone.

That's really the job here. Not just managing what's in the accounts, but making space for the conversation that's harder than the numbers. We built this firm the way we'd want to be treated ourselves, which means we'd rather ask the question in March than let it surface unexpectedly in December.

So here's the honest question: what's the conversation you've been meaning to have?
